What do you do when the good old toilet plunger fails on you? You upgrade to a toilet auger, of course.

What might that be, you wonder… well, it looks similar to your standard drain snake, but the only difference is that it has a cable that rotates with the help of a handle.

It’s specially made for toilets and is designed to ensure that your toilet bowl is protected from scratches.

Do you want to know how to use a toilet auger so that you don’t have to call your plumber every time the toilet gets clogged? This article can help you get started.

Different types of Toilet Augers

To figure out how to resolve the problem, you will first need to check what kind of toilet auger you have and whether it can solve the kind of clog or is compatible with the plumbing structure of your toilet.

Toilet augers generally come between the lengths of 3–6ft, so you should consider how far you need the tool to reach to clear out your toilet drain.

Among the different types of toilet augers, you will find that the market has various offerings. The most common ones include options with a closed or open coiled head that either push through the clogs or hook onto items.

Steps to unclog your toilet drain with the help of a Toilet Auger.

Firstly, assess the state of your toilet; after doing so, it’s advisable to wear protective gloves and place a bucket beside your working area before you start removing the clog. This will be a great help in preventing any messy situations.

Next, you need to take out your auger, ensure that only the head is coming out through the tube while the whole cable is pulled back inside the tool.

Place the auger inside in an angled back position with the curved end in the direction of the drain.

Now that the auger is placed to align with the drain, push the cable into the toilet while turning it clockwise and then push the cable forward when you feel like you can no longer turn it.

At this point, your toilet auger would have either hooked on to the clog or pushed it down. After which you can remove it from the toilet and clean it.
